B747 bumpy approach

What happens in this video ?

The Hong Kong's old Kai-Tak Airport approach is not the easiest one, especially with a strong cross wind. As the procedure requests, this Boeing 747 performs a crab approach: the rudder is used to maintain the aircraft heading, and the aircraft is kicked straight with the rudder just before touchdown.

On a CRM-course I was told that the pilot(X-airforce) failed to do the turn in time. He should have done a new approach but didn't. He blew 14 of 16 tires in that landing. There is no significant X-wind here. This is not good flying at all.

If this is the old Hong Kong Airport with a tight right turn to final (from aiming at the spot on the hill), plus that strong crosswind...Wow! Outstanding Airmanship! This wasn't luck, this was demonstrated expert skill.

I must say that he is an excellent and very tallented pilot. He really should have gone around with passengers onboard. Well, at least it became one of the most spactacular aviation videos I have EVER seen. Glad everybody's okay.

2 crew members to handle such a big bird, wth all the instruments to be taken into account while landing in such a bad gust, wth passengers on board, such spectacular and hard landing can only be done when you are god gifted. aero engineer

Wow. I'd love to know the wind speed here. I fly a lot in the sim and I must say, thats a nice landing. Must have been one stiff crosswind. Honestly, I think they should eliminate that approach. Too risky. But a skilled one at that.

The angle of approach of the 747 proved that the crosswind during the landing was much higher than the one tolerate by a 747. pilots have been definitely good but also very lucky not to crash down. Good example of something to avoid....

THE PILOT DIRCTED THE PLANE TO OPPOSE THE SIDE WIND DIRECTION IN ORDER TO GET A FULL ADVANTAGE OF THIS SITUATION. BECAUSE THEN, THE SLIGHTER THE PILOT STEERS THE PLANE'S RUDDER THE LARGER DEVIATION COURSE HE GETS.IT'S STILL RISKY MANEUVER

Ok Sean, this landing was not illegal!, this landing was completely safe, the plane landed with no fatalities, yes it may have been a lucky one, but then again, every landing is a certain amount of luck and skill

Kai Tak airport was notorious for crosswinds. Nevertheless, this pilot was lucky. Notice the engine almost touches the runway.

In strong side winds it is necessary to carry out these so called crab landings. They may look funny but are a standart procedure. It is amazing how this pilot handles his 747 like if it was a little Cessna. Exellent stuff!!!
