F14 too low: crash against the carrier

What happens in this video ?

On December 4th 1996, this F-14 carrier landing went terribly wrong. The plane was approaching too low, hit the ramp and exploded. The RIO survived, but the pilot was killed.

It was indeed a F/A 18 and the pilot did survive. I was one of the freaked out people running around the flight deck right after it happened.

According to the article here: http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19961205&slug=2363264 this was an F-18 crash, not an F-14 crash (it also looks like an F-18 in the video) and the sole pilot survived.
